Berkeley

A tiny kitchen, a rose-covered patio, and a whole lot of quality pizza and natural wine in downtown Berkeley.

Outline drawing of a wooden chair with a curved back and a padded seat, rendered in red on a black background.
Pizza on a white table with a bottle of red wine being poured into a glass and a second glass already filled. Two pizzas, one with jalapeños and sausage, the other with basil and cheese, on a wooden bench outdoors.
Exterior of Rose Pizzeria with blue sign and large glass windows showing inside seating, with customers dining, and a view into the kitchen area.

Rose opened here on University Avenue in December 2021. Out back is the rose garden that gave the restaurant its name, a quiet patio wrapped just enough to stay cozy on cooler nights.

The kitchen is famously small, about 100 square feet, with an oven that fits just six pizzas at a time. That constraint shaped everything: a hybrid of Neapolitan, New York, and New Haven traditions, with a thin, crackly, blistered crust and bold topping combinations, like the beloved She Wolf, with burrata, slow-roasted tomato, garlic confit, olives, capers, and Sicilian oregano.
